OTTAWA, Feb. 15, 2019 /CNW/ - The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on National Flag of Canada Day:
"Today, I join Canadians across the country and abroad to celebrate the 54th anniversary of our national flag.
"Fifty-four years ago, the National Flag of Canada was first flown on Parliament Hill and proudly raised in communities across Canada and diplomatic missions around the world.
"Wherever it flies, the Maple Leaf embodies the values we hold dearest – peace, diversity, openness, and freedom. Although young, like the country it represents, the Maple Leaf has traversed the world over and stood centre-stage for moment after moment in Canadian history.
"A rich history, a bold future – the Maple Leaf captures both thanks to generations of Canadians who have worked hard for a better life, and created more opportunity for all.
"Beyond our borders, our flag has become an emblem that garners respect and admiration, whether waving outside an embassy, adorning a backpack, or soaring into orbit.
"Today, I encourage Canadians to reflect on what the Maple Leaf means to them, how it has shaped our identity as a country, and what it stands for around the world."
