OTTAWA, March 9, 2020 /CNW/ - The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Purim:
"Tonight at sundown, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will gather to celebrate Purim.
"To commemorate this joyous occasion, families and friends will come together to read from the Book of Esther, exchange gifts, and give generously to those in need. This holiday is also a chance to enjoy traditional foods, including hamantaschen pastries, with loved ones.
"Purim marks the escape of the Jewish people from persecution in the ancient Persian Empire. It is a time to celebrate their strength, perseverance, and resilience, and reminds us all of the need to stand up against antisemitism, discrimination, and hatred in Canada and around the world.
"Today, we recognize the significant contributions Jewish Canadians make to our communities from coast to coast to coast, and the important role they play in building a stronger and more inclusive Canada.
"On behalf of the Government of Canada, Sophie and I wish a happy Purim to all those celebrating.
"Chag Purim Sameach!"
