Statement by York University Vice-President Academic & Provost - York bringing back more classes
TORONTO, March 10, 2015 /CNW/ - As you are likely aware, last night CUPE 3903 members representing our contract faculty (Unit 2) ratified a new three year contract. Regrettably, two units of CUPE 3903 representing Teaching Assistants and Graduate Assistants (Units 1 and 3), rejected the University's offers.
Since the labour disruption has now passed six days, today the Senate Executive met to determine what courses can resume and when, based on ensuring fairness to students and maintaining academic integrity. With our contract faculty returning to the classroom, the University is in the process of developing plans to resume classes as soon as possible.
We recognize how concerning this situation is for our students, their parents and for other members of our learning community. That is why our most immediate priority is to finalize plans to allow as many students as possible to return to their studies in order to complete their terms.
I am pleased to announce that effective Wednesday, March 11 courses offered by the following academic units will resume:
a) Lassonde School of Engineering
b) Schulich School of Business
c) School of Nursing
d) School of Administrative Studies in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies
e) School of Human Resources Management in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies.
A specific list of the courses that will be resuming tomorrow will be posted shortly after 10 p.m. this evening. Please go to yorku.ca/labour2015.
Please note that tutorials and labs may be affected - further details will be provided by the relevant programs. Senate Executive will meet on Thursday March 12 to review the Faculty-specific plans that will inform the Committee about resuming the balance of courses on Monday, March 16, 2015.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
