Statement from the Cobourg Cougars
Michael Dobie apologizes to hockey club for false, defamatory and offensive Tweet
COBOURG, ON, Sept. 28, 2016 /CNW/ - Earlier today, Michael Dobie apologized to the Cobourg Cougars Hockey Club for his false, defamatory and highly offensive Tweet regarding the Club and its players. This Tweet, from March 2015, included the hashtag #consentisoverrated.
As part of his apology, at the request of the hockey club, Mr. Dobie made a donation to the Ontario Hockey Association in support of its various player education initiatives, and to the Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre in Cobourg.
This apology, coupled with the Ontario Provincial Police announcing in September 2015 that no charges would be laid and there was no further reason to investigate those attending the party, allows the team, its management, players and staff, as well as its fans and the community, to bring this unfortunate chapter to a conclusion.
The club sincerely appreciates the support and encouragement it has received from the community and its fans during this time.
While no one associated with the club was responsible for the Tweet or the hashtag, we would like to again express our sympathy to anyone who was hurt by it or by the actions of Mr. Dobie.
