Statement from the Ontario Retirement Communities Association
OAKVILLE, ON, Oct. 26, 2018 /CNW/ - The Ontario Retirement Communities Association (ORCA) applauds the introduction of the Making Ontario Open For Business Act, 2018, by the Ontario Government.
Our members take caring for seniors seriously.
ORCA has worked tirelessly over the last year and a half on behalf of our members and the seniors who choose to call retirement communities home. We have worked to ensure fair implementation of a higher minimum wage and new labour laws to support employees to receive fair compensation and encourage businesses to grow.
We are encouraged that the new government is listening.
Because it is seniors, many of whom live on fixed incomes, who struggle to shoulder the higher cost of living that results from the unintended consequences of changes to labour laws.
And that is not right.
Our members value their employees. Retirement homes offer flexible, 24-hour service, 365 days a year which requires a workforce that is caring, large, well-trained and adaptable. Whether they are full-time or part-time staff, they are the heart of what we do.
Our members also respect the collective bargaining process and will continue to honour agreements as they exist, many of which have a greater right or benefit than what was proposed in previous legislation.
About ORCA:
The Ontario Retirement Communities Association (ORCA) is a voluntary not-for-profit association that represents 93.6 per cent of licensed retirement home suites in the province. Our members are proud to employ over 28,000 full and part-time workers who support over 56,000 seniors in Ontario.
