OTTAWA, March 8, 2019 /CNW/ - The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, issued this statement today to mark International Women's Day:
"In 1928, Eileen Vollick became the first Canadian woman pilot at just 19 years of age. She led the way for others. Over the following decades, women had to show tenacity and perseverance to join the transportation work force. Not always the obvious choice.
"More recently, Kathryn Whittaker, became the first female Canadian captain on a cruise ship.
"Now, one in four women have chosen the transportation industry.
"Today, on International Women's Day, I want to salute those women in the transportation workforce, serving as pilots, air traffic controllers, ship captains, locomotive engineers, truck and bus drivers, and a long list of other occupations. Women have filled vital roles throughout the years.
"Women's contribution is undeniable. And as we know, an important driver for the economy. But, unfortunately, still underrepresented in the Canadian transportation sector.
"It's no secret, there is a pilot shortage in our country. I would like to take this occasion to once again invite women to play a larger role in the future of aviation in Canada. This situation represents a tremendous opportunity for women to collaborate and make a difference in this field.
"The Government of Canada is pursuing its efforts in helping to change the attitudes and misconceptions that served as barrier to women entering the industry. Transport Canada is working on engaging more women to consider the many rewarding careers associated with transportation.
"To all women working in all transportation modes, and all the women working in my department, Transport Canada, I want to wish you an excellent 2019 International Women's Day."
