Statement of John Mcdermott , co-founder of McDermott House Canada, regarding audit of Sunnybrook Veterans Centre Residences
TORONTO, Nov. 16, 2012 /CNW/ - For some time, those of us who support veterans, military and first responders have recognized the need to expand and modernize the facilities in the Palliative Care Unit at the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre and transform it into the premier facility of its kind in Canada. For those with family members and friends currently in the Palliative Care Unit, that need is all the most urgent. Two years ago, McDermott House Canada received charitable status and set the goal of raising $3.6 million to effect such a transformation. I am proud to say that we have been very successful to date in raising funds and we continue to pursue our mandate. While we are aware that the federal government is in the process of auditing the residences within the Veterans Centre, we will not be deterred in our mission. In fact, if anything, it will only serve to strengthen our resolve. We await the results of the audit and, as we do, we stand strongly behind the staff at Sunnybrook who provide compassionate, excellent care on a daily basis.
