Statement on Canada's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women by The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Status of Women

OTTAWA, Dec. 6, 2016 /CNW/ - The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Status of Women, today issued the following statement on Canada's National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women:

"Today, Canadians remember the tragic murder of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1989 who were killed because they were women. Our nation still grieves for the victims, their families, friends, and communities.

The awful memory of the Montréal massacre provides us with an enduring call to action. Each of us has the power to say no to misogyny, reject sexist language, call out even casual sexism, and be respectful in our interactions with others.

The Government of Canada is taking important actions to raise awareness about violence against women and girls, help prevent it, and support victims. We are developing a federal strategy to address gender-based violence, and investing in Canada's network of shelters and transition homes to help ensure those fleeing domestic violence have a place to turn.

As we reflect on this solemn occasion, I encourage all Canadians to observe a minute of silence, or participate in a December 6 vigil.

I invite all Canadians to renew their commitment to ending gender-based violence by asking themselves: what actions are within my power to create a more inclusive and tolerant society for women, girls, and all Canadians?"
