TORONTO, Dec. 14, 2012 /CNW/ - Today, reports reveal that Avigdor Lieberman has resigned from his position as Israel's Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. This decision was taken in response to yesterday's announcement by Israel's Attorney General that charges would be laid against Lieberman for breach of trust.
In response, David Koschitzky, Chair of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, issued the following statement:
"Today's announcement is a clear demonstration of the strength of Israel's democratic institutions. Moreover, in holding the country's elected officials accountable under the rule of law, Israel's Attorney General provides an important model for the Middle East. As people across the region suffer under dictatorships and theocratic regimes, the small state of Israel - the region's sole liberal democracy - exemplifies the sort of future we hope will ultimately emerge across the Middle East."
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs is a non-partisan organization that serves as the advocacy arm of the Jewish Federations of Canada.
