Be Mindful of Water Safety This Labour Day Weekend
TORONTO, Aug. 31, 2018 /CNW/ - Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is telling the public to exercise extreme caution around provincial waterways, and to be mindful of water safety especially near or around hydropower stations and dams.
"It's a very simple message, stay clear, stay safe," said Mike Martelli, OPG President Renewable Generation. "Enjoy this last long weekend of the summer, but people need to keep themselves and their families safe by paying attention to water levels, warning signs, fences and booms."
Most hydropower stations are controlled remotely by operators located many kilometres away. As a result, water levels near OPG dams and stations can quickly change without notice making them unsafe areas for swimming, boating, or fishing.
OPG recently launched a new water safety campaign with a public service announcement featuring the harrowing tale of Dammy the Beaver. An avid angler, Dammy learns firsthand about the dangers of fishing near hydro dams and generating stations. His message to everyone tempted by the waters in and around such structures is to stay clear, stay safe because your life may be at risk. The PSA will run all summer on major Ontario networks, and is part of a broader multimedia strategy promoting water safety around OPG's dams and hydroelectric generating stations, which includes print and online advertising.
