TORONTO, June 29, 2016 /CNW/ - Happy Canada Day from all of us at Ontario Power Generation (OPG). If you plan to celebrate our country's 149th birthday on the waterways, please make safety a priority, especially near OPG's hydro dams and stations. When heading out this Canada Day weekend respect the warning signs and barriers at and near OPG's facilities.
"Recently, some people have disregarded our no trespassing signs and have gone fishing or boating near our facilities on the Montreal, Nipigon and Ottawa rivers," says Mike Martelli, OPG's President, Renewable Generation and Power Marketing. "This sort of activity is dangerous, so we work with the Ontario Provincial Police and Transport Canada on enforcement. Charges can and have been laid in cases where people trespass."
OPG owns and operates 65 hydroelectric generating stations and 240 dams across the province. In areas surrounding these stations, changing water levels and strong undertows can happen quickly. "We take safety seriously," says Martelli. "Stay Clear, Stay Safe is our message."
Through its nuclear, hydro and biomass generating facilities OPG provides about half the power Ontario relies on. The electricity OPG produces is more than 99 per cent free of greenhouse gas and smog causing emissions.
