Latest Commitment to Making Products Even Better
TORONTO, Nov. 9, 2015 /CNW/ - The SUBWAY® restaurant chain has introduced to customers a new shaved steak at the more than 3,200 restaurants across Canada. The shaved steak contains no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives. This is the latest menu improvement announced as part of the SUBWAY® brand's journey to make the food it serves even better.
The shaved steak follows the introduction of other products in Canada, such as our bread, which contains no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. It is consistent with the brand's commitment to remove all artificial colours, flavours and preservatives from all of its sandwiches in North America over the next 14 months.
According to Elizabeth Stewart, Director Corporate Social Responsibility for the SUBWAY® brand, these changes will be made without sacrificing taste. Five years ago the R&D team worked with suppliers to start reducing sodium as well as high fructose corn syrup from its products.
Since its opening 50 years ago, the SUBWAY® chain, one of the first open kitchen concepts, always makes its sandwiches and salads right up front where everything is seen and with the customers input on making their perfect sandwich using a wide variety of freshly baked bread, lean meats, vegetables and toppings.
"Back in 1965, when Fred DeLuca and Dr. Peter Buck opened their first sandwich shop, they had a simple goal: give their neighbours and customers easy access to good, quality food at a great value," Elizabeth said. "Today, SUBWAY® has thousands of locations, but we still uphold the same standards. We are committed to choice and quality, but we also take wellness and environmental responsibility very seriously. The new shaved steak we are introducing in Canada is a perfect example of how we plan to continuously improve to serve our customers."

"Removing some of these ingredients will be relatively straightforward," Elizabeth said. But, we felt it was important to set an ambitious goal as a means to give us something to shoot for and demonstrate our unwavering commitment to wellness."
