Steelworkers Cancel Event at Carmen's, Call for Labour Settlement
HAMILTON, ON, March 25, 2014 /CNW/ - Hamilton Steelworkers are pulling a major function from Carmen's banquet centre as part of a boycott against local venues embroiled in an ongoing labour dispute.
The Hamilton Steelworkers Area Council has cancelled its annual Steelworkers Stewards Dinner and Dance, which was scheduled for April 12 at Carmen's.
"We will not support any organization or business which does not respect its workers," said Darren Green, Hamilton Steelworkers Area Council president. "We will raise our voices loudly to demand justice for these workers."
The Steelworkers are calling on the City of Hamilton, Carmen's and Global Spectrum to settle the dispute with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 772.
"In a city that is so well-known as a labour town, which is in fact still referred to as Steeltown, it is shameful that workers are being treated in this manner and it has to stop," Green said.
The Hamilton Steelworkers Area Council is hosting a conference this week at the Sheraton Hotel, attended by Steelworkers from across Ontario and Atlantic Canada.
