Steelworkers Endorse Uzma Qureshi for Hamilton City Council
HAMILTON, ON, Feb. 22, 2016 /CNW/ - The United Steelworkers (USW) today announced it is endorsing candidate Uzma Qureshi in the by-election for the Ward 7 seat on Hamilton city council.
A community builder for many years, a Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal recipient and currently the marketing and communications coordinator for the YWCA Hamilton, Qureshi is running to replace Scott Duvall, who was elected as federal Member of Parliament for Hamilton Mountain.
Qureshi is being endorsed by Hamilton Steelworkers Area Council President Darren Green, Hamilton Steelworkers Area Coordinator Tom Walsh, USW Ontario Director Marty Warren, Assistant to the USW Ontario Director Tony DePaulo and USW National Director Ken Neumann.
"We looked carefully at all the candidates and we concluded that Uzma is the person best suited to stand up for the constituents and working people in Ward 7," says DePaulo.
"Uzma is a proud resident of Ward 7 who was raised on the central mountain and she is raising her family there as well," Warren noted. "She is just the type of loyal, concerned Hamilton resident voters are looking for. Uzma's community involvement and her outreach efforts are making a better life for those who live and work in Hamilton."
"We know that Uzma, like Hamilton Steelworkers, lives and works by our guiding principle that 'Community Matters.' As a city councillor, Uzma will bring great experience from her community work and she will continue to advocate for Stelco retirees and U.S. Steel workers," Neumann says.
