TORONTO, Aug. 28, 2014 /CNW/ - The Steelworkers Humanity Fund is contributing $15,000 to support Oxfam Canada's ongoing humanitarian work in Gaza.
"The recent conflict in Gaza has resulted in thousands of killed and injured and had a severe impact on the people of Gaza," said Ken Neumann, United Steelworkers (USW) National Director and President of the Steelworkers Humanity Fund.
"Oxfam has been providing humanitarian aid in the Gaza strip for several years and the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is pleased to contribute to Oxfam's efforts to ramp up its work to provide safe water, distribute food and food vouchers and support functioning hospitals," Neumann said.
"We urge the Government of Canada to also provide humanitarian aid for Gaza," he said.
Humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza is one of the five points of a plan for peace advocated by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).
Founded in 1985, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is a registered charitable organization that focuses primarily on development projects and emergency aid in developing countries. The fund also supports Canadian communities in crisis. USW members contribute to the fund through clauses negotiated into collective agreements. In some cases employers make matching contributions.
