TORONTO, Aug. 11, 2015 /CNW/ - The Steelworkers Humanity Fund is contributing $20,000 to help Aboriginal and northern families recover from community evacuations triggered by forest fires in northern Saskatchewan.
The Steelworkers Humanity Fund is contributing to Food Banks of Saskatchewan and its Food For Fire Evacuees program.
"The forest fires have disrupted and traumatized thousands in northern Saskatchewan and left many needing a helping hand to recover," said Steelworkers Humanity Fund President Ken Neumann.
"We are pleased that the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is able to provide funds for food hampers of non-perishable items that will immediately benefit families while local services are being reinstated," Neumann said.
Neumann praised United Steelworkers Local 8914 in northern Saskatchewan which advocated for Steelworkers Humanity Fund support for recovery efforts in the region.
Founded in 1985, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is a registered charitable organization that focuses primarily on development projects and emergency aid in developing countries and supports Canadian communities in crisis. United Steelworkers (USW) members contribute to the fund through clauses negotiated into collective agreements. In some cases employers make matching contributions.
