Steelworkers Join June 4th Website Campaign to Protest Harper's Attack on the Environment and Democracy Français
TORONTO, June 4, 2012 /CNW/ - The United Steelworkers is joining hundreds of organizations across Canada as a single voice for Canada's environment, for human rights and democracy.
"The federal government's omnibus budget bill will make sweeping changes without enough public input or debate. Steelworkers will not stand for the weakening of environmental protections included in Bill C-38. And we won't stand for the silencing of activists and organizations that fight to protect our environment," said Ken Neumann, USW National Director.
The USW is supporting the Black Out Speak Out campaign. On June 4, the USW's website www.usw.ca asks visitors to click through to www.blackoutspeakout.ca and take action.
"The USW is speaking out for nature and democracy. Silence is not an option," said Neumann.
The federal budget legislation puts land, water and climate at risk by making enormous changes to Canada's environmental laws. It also contains sweeping new powers to limit debate and silence legitimate voices, including those of land owners, First Nations, charities and other Canadians.
The USW is supporting Black Out Speak Out to defend two core Canadian values: nature and democracy.
The USW is an advocate for working people and the environment through Blue Green Canada, a strategic alliance with Environmental Defence. The USW is working to create safe and healthy workplaces. Environmental Defence is working to protect the environment and human health. Blue Green Canada combines these efforts to fight for green jobs.
