Steelworkers Offer Condolences In Miners' Deaths

SUDBURY, ON, May 6, 2014 /CNW/ - "On behalf of all our union's members and their families, I wish to extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the two workers killed today at Lockerby Mine," said United Steelworkers (USW) Local 6500 President Rick Bertrand.

"We stand with our community and offer our support and assistance to the families at this unbearable time and in the difficult days ahead," Bertrand said.

"We are shocked and saddened by this terrible news," said Myles Sullivan, USW Northeastern Ontario Co-ordinator.

"Our community is once again mourning a tragic and devastating loss. Our hearts go out to the families and to our entire community," Sullivan said.

The two workers were killed Tuesday morning while working underground at the Lockerby Mine, operated by First Nickel Inc.

"In light of today's horrible events, we must all reaffirm our commitment to work for greater safety in the mining industry and all workplaces," Bertrand said.

"We know there are serious issues with regard to safety in Ontario's mines, mills and smelters and that is why the USW has fought so hard for a comprehensive mining safety review," said Sullivan. "The province must commit the resources required to ensure a thorough process that results in meaningful change, without delay."

The USW represents office, clerical and technical employees at First Nickel Inc.
