Steelworkers Reach New Agreement with Hampton Inn/Homewood Suites
SUDBURY, ON, Sept. 26, 2016 /CNW/ - United Steelworkers (USW) Local 2020 members and the Hampton Inn and Homewood Suites in Sudbury have negotiated a new collective agreement providing wage increases and other improvements.
Gains in the three-year agreement, covering 70 employees at the two hotels, include wage increases of 40 cents an hour in each year of the deal. The wage increases amount to annual 3.2% pay hikes for most employees.
"Our members stuck together throughout a challenging process," said Roger Morin, USW Local 2020 President. "In the end they achieved a fair contract that recognizes their hard work and contributions to the company's success."
Other contract improvements include an additional floater day off in each year of the agreement, a reduction in employee co-pay fees for benefits and a commitment for a joint labour-management committee to review the benefits package to further reduce the cost of benefits.
The employees and hotels also negotiated new contract language to provide leave for workers affected by domestic violence.
"This is a terrific agreement for these employees and they should be proud of how they stood up for each other and showed a commitment to improve their workplace," said Marty Warren, USW Ontario Director.
