Steelworkers to initiate private prosecution against Weyerhaeuser for 2004
death of sawmill worker
PRESS CONFERENCE TOMORROW (March 25) AT 1:00 PM
BURNABY, BC, March 24 /CNW/ - Tomorrow the United Steelworkers (USW) will be launching a private prosecution in the New Westminster Provincial Courthouse, alleging that the Weyerhaeuser Company Ltd. was criminally negligent in the death of sawmill worker Lyle Hewer on November 17, 2004.
Appearing as council for the USW will be prominent criminal lawyer Glen Orris, Q.C.
At 1 pm on Thursday, March 25th, USW Western Canada District Director Stephen Hunt and Orris will hold a press conference on the steps of the BC Provincial Courthouse in downtown New Westminster to explain this unprecedented action and its relationship to the 2004 "Westray" Amendments to the Criminal Code.
