SAN DIEGO, CA, June 19, 2017 /CNW/ - Yesterday the innovative pharmaceutical industry and the Government of Alberta solidified a collaboration to ignite the life sciences sector in Alberta. This strategic partnership will identify ways to attract investment, expand research, improve patient access to medicines and, ultimately, improve the health of Albertans while supporting the economic diversification of the province.
"Alberta's globally competitive health research and life sciences sector has caught the attention of industry partners," said Deron Bilous, Minister of Economic Development and Trade. "We're proud to explore ways to maximize this collaboration to attract investment and expertise while improving our health system."
"We are delighted to be partnering with Alberta to enhance the life sciences sector and to further benefit patients," said Pamela Fralick, President of Innovative Medicines Canada. "Like our members, Alberta has a strong desire to ensure better health outcomes for patients through innovative approaches to research and health system improvement. Albertans and their health system have already benefitted from our members' initiatives in the province, and we look forward to an even stronger collaboration moving forward."
The Memorandum of Understanding signed today focusses on three areas of alignment:
(a) |
create conditions in Alberta to attract research investment and partnerships; |
(b) |
advance Alberta as a world class centre of excellence for health data creation and analysis; and |
(c) |
support innovation and the commercialization of Alberta discoveries by Alberta small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). |
"Alberta has strength in its health research and innovation cluster," said Mel Wong, President of BioAlberta. "We look forward to working with the province and capitalizing on the experience and resources of the global pharmaceutical companies to support our local enterprise."
