Toronto's Bendale Business and Technical Institute serves up win
TORONTO, Nov. 12, 2015 /CNW/ - A team of students from Toronto has taken home top prize in The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair's inaugural High School Chef Challenge.
Bendale Business and Technical Institute earned top ranking from the judges in the cooking competition on Tuesday, Nov. 10, edging out student teams from Bramalea Secondary School in Brampton and Thistletown Collegiate Institute in Rexdale.
The Bendale team of students Brooklyn Bouffard, Emily Shannon, Caroline Fermo and Chase Clarke was coached by teacher Darren Beer.
The competition was a collaborative effort by The Royal and FoodShare Toronto, a non-profit organization that works with communities and schools to deliver healthy food and food education.
"We welcome thousands of students to The Royal every year to help them learn more about agriculture and fresh, local food," said Charlie Johnstone, The Royal's Chief Executive Officer. "This new high school chef challenge was a great way to accomplish that goal in a fun, interactive way."
In partnership with FoodShare Toronto, The Royal invited high school teams from across the province to submit their best recipes. The three winners of the recipe competition earned spots at the table in the Royal High School Chef Competition on the Burnbrae Farms Food & Lifestyle Stage.
Bendale cooked up its winning performance with a smoked turkey ravioli dish, featuring acorn squash and fresh heirloom tomato concasse.
Featuring 10 days of family-oriented entertainment, exhibits and agricultural competition, The Royal kicked off November 6, 2015 at Toronto's Exhibition Place. The Fair continues bringing country life to the heart of Canada's largest city until November 15, 2015.
