Study by the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal - Metals and minerals processing: a major contributor to Quebec's economy

MONTREAL, Feb. 7, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - The Quebec Mining Association (QMA), the Réseau de la transformation métallique du Quebec(RTMQ, the Quebec metals processing network) and Minalliance are pleased to note the conclusions of a study of metals processing in Quebec published today by the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. The study presents a new, documented view of the importance of this sector for Quebec's economy and, more specifically, for the greater Montreal area.

The study, the first to examine the metals processing sector in Quebec, makes it easier to visualize the size of the industry, which includes 56 primary processors and almost 2,145 secondary metals processing enterprises. Together, as revealed by the study, the primary and secondary processing sectors support over 75,000 direct and indirect jobs every year in Quebec.

Tertiary processing is also a key activity, and the study by the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal sets out a number of strategies to maximize the benefits generated by the metals sector.

Conclusion

This type of research, along with other future studies, will help guide the implementation of enlightened public policies, based on actual data rather than on the myths that sometimes cast a shadow over Quebec's natural resources sector.
