MISSISSAUGA, ON, June 15, 2017 /CNW/ - Subaru Canada, Inc. (SCI) is excited to announce that the all-new 2018 Subaru Crosstrek will be available at dealerships across Canada in July. Built on the new Subaru Global Platform, the 2018 Crosstrek is the result of new thinking, which is expressed through Subaru's new design language of "Dynamic x Solid." With its innovative design, enhanced power and performance, and impressive levels of safety, the fun-to-drive Crosstrek is versatile enough to excel in both off-road and city driving.
All-New Design, Inside and Out
The 2018 Crosstrek has a new exterior design that features a more sculpted body with prominent wheel arches and flowing lines. Providing a sharp contrast to the body colour, black side and wheel arch cladding, lower rocker panels and roof rails enhance the dramatic new look that flows to the inside. Riding on a 30 mm longer wheelbase than the previous generation, there is substantially more room in the cabin despite only marginal increases in width and length. Greater usability of cargo space is provided by 60/40 split flat-folding rear seats and a wider rear gate opening. Together with excellent all-around visibility, 220 mm of ground clearance, and 17-inch alloy wheels, the result is a nimble yet capable SUV.
Foundational Support
The new Subaru Global Platform, together with the new 2.0-litre direct injection SUBARU BOXER engine, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD), and EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, are core technologies for Subaru and provide a foundation for the next generation of Subaru vehicles. The platform combines a new framework with optimized cross-sections and highly stiffened joints between structures, significantly improving straight-line stability, agility, and ride comfort while also reducing noise, vibration, and harshness. One important change point is that rigidity of the unitized body structure has been increased by over 70 percent.
A lower centre of gravity and revised suspension systems contribute to the greatest leap in Subaru's performance evolution. The double-wishbone independent rear suspension mounts its rear stabilizer bar directly to the body, significantly improving body control and stability. With its inherent handling agility, the Subaru Global Platform also delivers greater hazard avoidance capability.
Power and Performance
The new FB 2.0-litre 4-cylinder direct injection SUBARU BOXER engine boosts both performance (152 hp compared to 148 hp) and drivability. The Convenience, Touring, and Sport trims come standard with a new 6-speed manual transmission. The optional Lineartronic CVT now features driver-selectable X-Mode with hill descent control. The CVT is optional on the Convenience, Touring, and Sport trims, and comes standard on the Limited trim. A 7-speed manual mode function with steering wheel paddle shifters that offers the driver an enhanced level of control is standard on Touring, Sport and Limited trims equipped with the CVT.
All trims also come with a reduced steering ratio, and Active Torque Vectoring, a system that helps reduce understeer and keeps the vehicle on the driver's intended cornering path.
Safety and Security
Subaru designed the 2018 Crosstrek to provide even higher levels of safety than the outgoing model, which was named an IIHS Top Safety Pick for six years running (when equipped with available EyeSight). The new platform underpinning the 2018 Crosstrek is over 70% more rigid, and increases crash energy absorption by 40 percent, resulting in improved crash worthiness and reduced risk of injury to occupants.
The optional EyeSight system, available on the Sport and Limited trims, includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane departure warning, lane sway warning, and lane keep assist. New to Crosstrek for 2018, lane keep assist can provide gentle steering inputs if the system senses the vehicle is departing its lane, helping the vehicle maintain its intended course. The optional EyeSight Package now includes reverse automatic braking, which can apply the vehicle's brakes if an obstacle is detected while reversing, and high beam assist which automatically switches from high beams to low beams when necessary.
Other new safety features this year are LED steering responsive headlights that illuminate curves as the vehicle steers into them and a new rear-view camera with dynamic guide lines that help the driver maneuver safely. As well, all 2018 Crosstrek models include front seat side impact airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver's knee airbag.
Audio and Technology
SUBARU STARLINK multimedia systems offer the latest in digital music playback, Bluetooth wireless capability, iPod control, smartphone integration, and more. The display screen doubles as the rear-view camera display and the top-level system includes navigation.
New multimedia features also found standard on all 2018 Crosstrek trims are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. These combine the benefits of the existing touchscreen infotainment system with the design, apps and functionality of your smartphone. With an easy-to-use interface that is safety-focused, they also include voice recognition that substantially reduces distractions while driving.
Four Trim Levels
Four trims are available in the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek: Convenience, Touring, Sport, and Limited. The Convenience is Crosstrek's all-new entry-level trim and includes an impressive set of standard features, such as a new 6.5-inch multimedia touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, air conditioning, power windows with auto up/down on both driver and passenger sides, 60/40-split fold-down rear seats, power door locks, and power side mirrors. Also included are an aluminum hood, a roofline spoiler with integrated brake lamp, multi-function display with fuel economy information, tilt and telescoping steering column, torque vectoring, 17-inch machine finish alloy wheels, integrated roof rails, carpeted floor mats, and privacy glass on the rear windows.
The Touring trim includes all of these features, together with heated front seats, new premium cloth upholstery, automatic climate control, wiper de-icer, fog lights, a rear centre armrest with cup holders, 6.3-inch colour multifunction display, automatic headlights with welcome lighting, shark fin antenna, 6-speaker audio system, a cargo cover, as well as a leather CVT shift boot and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
The Sport trim adds to the features of the Touring trim with LED steering responsive headlights, power tilting and sliding glass sunroof, Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection system with Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross-traffic Alert, a power driver's seat, aluminum pedals, premium sport cloth upholstery, dual USB ports and an 8-inch infotainment system with a single disc CD player and SXM with Travel Link and Advanced Audio features (subscription required).
The top of the line Limited trim comes fully equipped, and also includes 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seating surfaces, heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, premium Harman Kardon 8-speaker audio system, and an 8-inch infotainment system with GPS navigation.
