TORONTO, Aug. 8, 2014 /CNW/ - Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre has been recognized as a national leader for its use of SunnyCare, an electronic medical record (EMR) system designed to provide authorized clinicians with quick and easy access to patient medical information on desktop computer workstations and mobile devices.
"I applaud Sunnybrook for developing SunnyCare, an essential tool to improve patient outcomes," said the Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Finance and Minister responsible for the Greater Toronto Area. "Sunnybrook has a rich history of igniting innovation in health care, and I am proud to recognize the leadership it has demonstrated with the federal investments made through Canada Health Infoway."
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is one of seven health care providers across Canada to receive the LEADing Practice Award from Canada Health Infoway (Infoway), in partnership with Accreditation Canada, for demonstrating leadership in the advanced use of technology in clinical practice. The award is part of Infoway's pan-Canadian "Knowing is Better" clinician education campaign developed to generate broad awareness of the benefits of interconnected electronic health record systems in clinical practice across Canada.
Sunnybrook's SunnyCare earned the national award for developing a system that provides timely access to information and allows for increased collaboration and communication among health care teams.
"SunnyCare enables multiple clinicians to work in tandem, which improves the efficiency of sharing information across the organization and keeps patient safety at the forefront," said Barry McLellan, President and CEO, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. "It allows clinicians to immediately see test results, patient status, and next steps in the patient's care without having to rely on sharing less efficient paper-based files."
SunnyCare interconnects with the Sunnybrook patient portal, MyChart™, and many clinical information systems including clinical documentation, results and image viewing, electronic sign-out, and electronic discharge summaries. In addition, SunnyCare Mobile gives secure access to patient results on any smartphone or tablet device, anywhere in the world.
"Patients win when authorized clinicians have ready access to their medical information, and SunnyCare places it at their fingertips," said Michael Green, President and CEO, Canada Health Infoway. "By reducing information gaps, SunnyCare helps improve outcomes, creates efficiencies and places patients at the centre of the circle of care."
Over the next year, Sunnybrook will continue to share and promote SunnyCare with other clinicians and health care leaders in the hospital.
