Supporting the Learning Outcomes of Students through the Sharing of Effective and Sustainable Teaching Practices with Educators in Haiti
TORONTO, March 2, 2020 /CNW/ - In August 2019, the Educator & Leadership Institute (ELI) was in Cap-Haitian, Haiti where they provided a series of courses and workshops focused on supporting the Cap-Haitian teaching and learning community. These sessions were held at the College Regina Assumpta and participants included over 600 school teachers from 70 different school across the country, 200 children, 50 university students and 30 Canadian educators.
Cap-Haitian educators and students participated in sessions that included a STEAM Camp, Leadership and Special Education Courses, Science and Math Workshops, ESL (English as a Second Language) Programs, and much more. Throughout these sessions, educators gained effective learning tools and strategies that they can bring back to their own classes and improve the learning experience of their students. Additionally, the STEAM Camp provided many Haitian students with the chance to learn about different math and science related careers and fields of study. The STEAM Camp specifically serves as an opportunity for girls between the ages of 4-14 to develop STEAM awareness and abilities; more than 200 Haitian girls participated.
One of the main objectives of ELI's visit to Haiti, was to provide educators with learning strategies that were highly effective, but also sustainable. Imparting sustainable processes and structures which would continue to positively impact the Cap-Haitian learning communities after ELI departed, was a crucial principle which each program followed closely.
Emphasis was also placed on the increased importance of new resources to bridge the technology divide that many Haitian educators and students face day-to-day. ELI and its members provided tools and strategies, including USB keys that contain valuable learning material and resources that can be easily shared and replicated, to the participating member in order to help bridge the technological divide.
The week was filled valuable learning experiences for teachers, students, and ELI members alike. The end of the week was capped off with a graduation ceremony, where 200 participants completed their three years of training and 50 Haitian University students were recognized for completing a week of ESL classes.
ELI has taken place in Haiti each year since its inception in 2016. This year Vretta, a leading educational technology company and recent partner of ELI, was honoured to be invited to support the mission of ELI. Vretta's president, Anand Karat, was invited to give a keynote speech on the importance of the small steps that bring people together to transform the educational landscape of a nation.
ELI's vision is founded on a Haitian Creole expression,"Piti piti, ti pay pay, zwazo fe nich – little by little, straw by straw, the bird builds its nest." As their partner, Vretta is excited to support ELI's vision for learning communities around the world.
