MONTREAL, Nov. 28, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - The Coalition Priorité Cancer au Québec is pleased to announce the participation of culinary arts celebrity, Sœur Angèle, as patron of the 5th National Conference to Defeat Cancer event scheduled to take place on April 11-12, 2013 at the Hilton Montreal Bonaventure.
"I was proud to accept the Coalition's invitation to take on the role of patron for the 5th National Conference to Defeat Cancer. As I see it, cancer is but one stage in a process, and we need to do all that we can to come out ahead. Life demands that we continue to give; the main thing is to live each moment fully," believes Sœur Angèle, who is herself stricken with colon cancer. "It's all about the manner in which you decide to react and the attitude you decide to adopt after being diagnosed with cancer. Rather than give up, you need to cultivate the kind of unlimited hope that will help you make it through this ordeal. As patron of the 5th National Conference to defeat cancer, this is my wish for those who have cancer: hope and encouragement during a stage of life that is always challenging."
Living in dignity rather than reflecting on the threat of death from cancer
Under the theme Living with dignity, the 5th National Conference program revolves around hot news topics like research protocols, patient-pharmacist complicity, new approaches to cancer-related leading-edge technologies, psychological patient distress, the reduction of lung-cancer-related waiting times, the economic reality of cancer, spiritual care and the management of chronic pain, revealing diagnoses to patients. All these topics will be addressed by high-profile speakers and experts with a reputation in their field. Also planned is the delivery of vibrant testimonials, on stage as well as on screen, designed to reflect the reality of people with cancer.
The Coalition will also have the honour of welcoming Health and Social Services minister Dr. Réjean Hébert.
The Coalition will continue to discuss new issues in the battle against cancer, launch debates focusing on decades-old problems in Quebec, and offer solutions.
Innovative events
New events have been added to this year's program, including "À nos casseroles pour vaincre le cancer", a culinary event featuring Sœur Angèle, who will prepare on stage a recipe drawn from Richard Béliveau's cooking book "Les aliments pour vaincre le cancer".
Furthermore, during "Une rencontre avec…", Winston McQuade, moderator, interviewer and artist, prostate cancer survivor, PROCURE - The Force Against Prostate Cancer spokesperson and patron of the Coalition's Cancer patients and survivors committee, will interview a public figure who will share his/her experience with cancer.
In a round table session led by Jean Pagé, journalist, moderator and spokesman for PROCURE - The Force Against Prostate Cancer, a group of well-known panelists from the journalism and communications community will examine the impact that cancer-awareness campaigns have on the behaviour of Quebecers.
Finally, hosted by its president, Jason Burns, the Pat Burns Award presentation ceremony returns for a 2nd year to honour informal caregivers who have done an outstanding job of supporting a person with cancer. Public celebrity Ale Dee, spokesman for the 2nd edition of the Pat Burns Award, Quebec rap scene musician and singer, and informal caregiver for his cancer-stricken mother, will sing "Femme de ma vie", now the official Pat Burns Award theme song.
As a premiere event, the petit déjeuner des célébrités/celebrity breakfast scheduled to be held on the morning of the 2nd day will give participants an opportunity to meet celebrities involved in Coalition activities and discuss with them some of the issues associated with the battle against cancer.
