Coca-Cola Canada Unveils 2009-2010 Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (CRS) Report
TORONTO, Dec. 2 /CNW/ - Coca-Cola Canada today unveiled its 2009-2010 Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (CRS) Report. In its second CRS Report for Canada, Coca-Cola Canada highlights its progress since 2007 on a series of sustainability and well-being initiatives implemented across the organization as a part of Live Positively - Coca-Cola's long term commitment to making a positive difference in Canada and around the world.
"Corporate responsibility and sustainability is at the core of our business strategy and we're proud to share our progress and goals for the future," says Kevin Warren, President, Coca-Cola Refreshments Canada. "Our organization and associates have embraced sustainability and are dedicated to making positive contributions to the workplace, to the community and to the environment every day."
"We have focused on sustainability efforts where we can make the biggest difference and align them with the needs of our stakeholders, our strategic priorities and the long-term viability of our business," says Nikos Koumettis, President, Coca-Cola Ltd. "We try to make sustainability a part of everything we do. We are committed to driving sustainable business growth while positively contributing to a more sustainable world."
Coca-Cola Canada's Live Positively platform focuses on seven key areas and clearly outlines their sustainability commitments and plans as they progress toward the year 2020. These seven areas consist of: Beverage Benefits, Active Healthy Living, Community, Workplace, Energy Efficiency and Climate Protection, Sustainable Packaging, and Water Stewardship.
In September 2009 Coca-Cola Canada held its first Sustainability Roundtable in Vancouver, bringing together 50 sustainability leaders from government, the private sector and non-governmental organizations. The roundtable addressed challenges and best practices in Water Stewardship, Energy Efficiency and Climate Protection and Sustainable Packaging. A second Roundtable will be held in Toronto on December 10, 2010 with the theme "The Power of Sustainable Partnerships".
Coca-Cola Canada is working with leading non-governmental organizations to bring innovative new programs to communities across Canada. As a part of its Water Stewardship efforts Coca-Cola Canada has teamed up on a $1 million partnership agreement with WWF-Canada to fund a freshwater conservation strategy and help secure key watersheds.
"Protecting Canada's rivers and their watersheds is vital for our communities and country to continue to thrive," says Gerald Butts, President and CEO, WWF-Canada. "Through their investment in our freshwater program and efforts to improve water efficiency in their operations, Coca-Cola Canada has embraced this challenge and committed to being a leader in these areas."
Encouraging Canadian youth to lead active, healthy lives, Coca-Cola Canada has also teamed up with ParticipACTION on a five year, $5 million partnership to develop and activate Sogo Active, a nationwide physical activity movement for teenagers.
"Sogo Active is designed to challenge youth to take responsibility for their own health and find new reasons and new opportunities to be active", says Kelly Murumets, President and CEO, ParticipACTION. "Coca-Cola Canada understands the importance of healthy active living and is creating programs that support and encourage that activity."
Some of the highlights of Coca-Cola Canada's 2009-2010 Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (CRS) Report include:
- Beverage Benefits: We are making it easier than ever for consumers to make informed beverage choices. Starting in early 2010, we were the first major beverage company to state calorie information on the front of many of our beverage packages.
- Active Living: With ParticipACTION, we developed a program designed to get youth active. To date, this program has given Canadian youth in over 1,000 community organizations a running start to get active.
- Community: Our 6300 Coca-Cola associates in over 50 communities across the country are proud to deliver a variety of over 100 beverages to Canadians every day.
- Climate Protection: Our goal is to grow the business, not the carbon in our manufacturing operations and to improve the energy efficiency and reduce emission of green house gasses in cold drink equipment. Since 2007, we've reduced our overall carbon footprint by 11%.
- Water Stewardship: Our goal is to safely return to communities and nature an amount of water equivalent to what we use in all our beverages and their production. Since 2005, we've improved our water use ratio by 24%
