Syncrude Sponsors Annual Fundraiser for the Stollery Children's Hospital

FORT McMURRAY, AB, Dec. 8 /CNW/ - Syncrude has signed on as a leading supporter of the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation's Snowflake Gala with a $150,000 sponsorship over three years.

The annual family-focused, black-tie fundraiser helps to support children's health through equipment, education, research, and special services.

"Syncrude is very focused on health and wellness, both at work and in the community," said Syncrude President and CEO Tom Katinas. "We view health care services in Edmonton as an important extension of local healthcare services because it is the place people from our community go to for specialized care."

The Stollery is renowned for providing exceptional medical care to children from across Alberta. In fact, it provides many specialized services that are not available in smaller communities like Fort McMurray.

About 25 percent of all patients at the Stollery are from communities across northern Alberta, including many from Fort McMurray. This statistic shows that the Stollery is an important extension of the services available in the local community.

"It's likely that a number of Stollery patients are the children of local residents," said Katinas. "That brings its value very close to home here in Fort McMurray."

In 2009, Syncrude has invested more than $500,000 in the Edmonton community through a variety of donations and sponsorships that include the following:

    
    -   $250,000 donation to NAIT toward the Syncrude wing in the Spartan
        Technology Centre
    -   $100,000 donation to the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation Prostate
        Centre
    -   $50,000 sponsorship of the Compassion House Foundation Fashion with
        Compassion event
    -   $25,000 NorQuest College Foundation for Aboriginal student support
    

In addition, Syncrude's United Way Employee Campaign raised a combined total of $1,474,448 . Out of this total, about $55,000 will be directed to both the Edmonton and Calgary campaigns.
