VAUGHAN, ON, March 10, 2016 /CNW/ - This March, Mother's Day will be a memorable one for thousands of Syrian newcomers to Canada. For the first time in many years, families will be able to celebrate this special day in their new home in Canada, in peace, away from violence and war.
Mother's Day in Syria is celebrated on March 21st. To recognize this day, Julie Mahfouz Rezvani, small business owner and Project Director of The Clothing Drive, and her husband Neo Mahfouz, a Syrian-born Canadian Architect, will host a Mother's Day celebration for 200 government sponsored refugees on Sunday, March 13, 2016 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Koalakidz Indoor Playground.
"Mother's Day is an important holiday in Syria. We wanted to do something special to honour mothers and their families who will be celebrating their First Mother's Day in Canada and for those, like my mother who still remain in war torn areas of Syria," says Neo Mahfouz, who has had family members killed in the war.
"The outpouring of support by many Syrian Canadians and their families, like Julie and Neo, is unprecedented. COSTI Immigrant Services is pleased to be working with the Mahfouz family to support what is sure to be a fun-filled and sentimental evening for everyone. It is heartwarming to know that many families will have an opportunity to enjoy the day in peace this March 21st and again in May!" says Mario J. Calla, Executive Director of COSTI.
COSTI delivers settlement services to Syrian newcomers arriving in Toronto through the Resettlement Assistance Program and has been working closely with The Clothing Drive since January. The Clothing Drive is a grassroots, volunteer organization with hundreds of volunteers that has distributed good quality, used clothing, toys and new personal hygiene products to over 1,500 Syrian newcomers since mid-January!
We would be honored if you could join us at Koalakidz Indoor Playground (960 Edgeley Blvd., #2, Vaughan), as Syrian newcomers celebrate their very first Mother's Day in Canada.
