MONTREAL, June 26, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - Tammy-Ann Deslongchamps, of Magog, pleaded guilty today to tax evasion charges at the Montréal courthouse. She was fined $93,808, which represents 100% of the child and family benefits she unduly received.
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) investigation revealed that, between July 1, 2003, and June 30, 2009, Tammy-Ann Deslongchamps voluntarily contravened the Income Tax Act by filing false Canada child tax benefit (CCTB) applications for five fictitious children. This scheme enabled her to receive $93,808 in payments she was not entitled to.
Ms. Deslongchamps is the second person within the last few years to have been convicted in such a scheme. In April 2011, her sister Shayna-Lynne Deslongchamps, a Magog resident, also pleaded guilty to a tax evasion charge. She was fined $19,605 for having made false claims for three fictitious children.
The above information was obtained from the court records.
When individuals are convicted of tax evasion, they must still repay the full amount of taxes or benefits owing, plus interest and any administrative penalties that apply.
Child and family benefits are monthly payments made to eligible families to help them with the cost of raising their children under the age of 18. The CRA is responsible for making sure that individuals receive the benefits to which they are entitled. That is why it is committed to educating taxpayers about their obligations under the Income Tax Act.
