OTTAWA, July 14, 2017 /CNW/ - The Taxpayers' Ombudsman, Sherra Profit, is announcing an examination into how the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) communicates to shelters about benefits that are available to taxpayers.
The examination will focus on the communication and outreach efforts to shelters regarding benefits programs that are administered by the CRA, for example the Canada child benefit. After the examination, the Taxpayers' Ombudsman will make her findings public in a report.
The Ombudsman has published, on her website, a copy of the memorandum to the Minister of National Revenue launching this systemic examination. This is being done to support greater awareness and transparency into the work being done by the Ombudsman's office.
Taxpayers who may have information relevant to ongoing examinations can contact the Taxpayer's Ombudsman's Office at 1‑866‑586-3839, file a complaint or send an email to [email protected].
The Taxpayers' Ombudsman may initiate a systemic examination when complaints or questions are raised about a service issue that may impact a large number of taxpayers or a segment of the population. Recommendations arising from these examinations are aimed at improving the service provided to taxpayers by the Canada Revenue Agency.
Quote
"People who use shelters are in precarious situations, either physically, mentally, or financially. Too often, a lack of knowledge or limited services stop them from getting the benefits that they need, when they need them. Our examination will look into efforts put forward by the Canada Revenue Agency to raise awareness about benefits -- to people using shelters and to those who work in shelters."
