Nike Valeus receives prestigious TD Scholarship for Community Leadership
TORONTO, May 28, 2013 /CNW/ - Local Scarborough student Nike Valeus is one of twenty high school students to be awarded the TD Scholarship for Community Leadership. Valued at up to $70,000 per student, students who have earned the scholarship have demonstrated innovation and passion for making a difference in their community.
Nike has been recognized for fostering motivation and engagement among students at his school by developing a Broadcast Club and the school's African Student Alliance to support students of African descent - he has given students an opportunity to make constructive change in the community. He has also been a participant in the Pathways to Education program since 2009.
"Nike has contributed immensely to the fabric of the Scarborough Village Community and is a role model and mentor for many students - as he reaches his goals he works with younger students to motivate them to do the same," says Ronni Gorman, Program Manager, Pathways to Education - Scarborough Village. "As the drive behind the Broadcast Club at school, Nike's meticulous attention to detail and commitment to video history creation has been unprecedented and the legacy of his work will undoubtedly be felt for many years within the community."
In its 18th year, the TD Scholarships for Community Leadership are awarded to students in their final year of high school or CEGEP in Quebec who have demonstrated leadership in improving their community. The scholarship includes up to $10,000 for tuition and $7,500 for living expenses per year. In addition, recipients are guaranteed offers of summer employment at TD with mentorship and networking opportunities.
