Teacher from Thunder Bay New OTF President

TORONTO, Sept. 4, 2012 /CNW/ - The OTF Board of Governors on August 21, 2012 elected Thunder Bay teacher Terry Hamilton as the 69th President of the Ontario Teachers' Federation at its Annual Meeting in Niagara Falls.

A graduate of McMaster University and the University of Western Ontario, Hamilton has been a Math and Science teacher with the Lakehead Board of Education since the early 1980's.

Hamilton has also been very active in his Affiliate—the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF)—serving in a variety of local capacities in Thunder Bay including Branch President, Chief Negotiator, and District President. He has also served on behalf of OSSTF as a local Political Action Committee Member and as a Provincial Councillor for the Thunder Bay District, as well as an OTF Governor for the past four years.

During his candidacy for the position of OTF Table Officer, which has now led to his election as OTF President, Hamilton pointed out that: "This is a critical time for pension plans in Canadian economic history" noting that: "The OTF Governors, and particularly the 12 members of the OTF Executive, are the gatekeepers of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan."

While serving as OTF President, Hamilton will represent the professional interests of teachers, including their interest as the co-sponsor of the Teachers' Pension Plan.

The Ontario Teachers' Federation is the advocate for the teaching profession in Ontario and for its 160,000 teachers.  OTF members are full-time, part-time and occasional teachers in all the publicly funded  schools in the province—elementary, secondary, public, Catholic and francophone.
