Team Canada looking to chop their way to a gold medal in Liverpool for the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® 2018 World Championship
LIVERPOOL, England, Sept. 17, 2018 /CNW/ - The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® World Championships in Liverpool, England is the 2018 season finale for the global series. Twenty-three nations from across the world will chop and saw their way through the competition in hopes of finishing on top on October 19th-20th.
Team Canada is composed of 2018 World Champions Trophy Winner Stirling Hart (Vancouver, BC), 2017 Canadian Champion Mitch Hewitt (Scotch Creek, BC), 2015 Canadian Champion Marcel Dupuis (Memramcook, NB), 2016 World Rookie Champion Ben Cumberland (Keswick Ridge, NB) and 2016 Canadian Rookie Champion George Williams (River Denys, NS). Also joining Team Canada to Liverpool will be 2018 Canadian Rookie Champion Connor Morse (Kingston, NS).
"I am excited to be a part of Team Canada once again, for the 5th consecutive year! The 2017 World Championships didn't go as well as we expected, so we are hungry for a big win," says Stirling Hart, who is just coming off an international stage win at the World Champions Trophy in Marseille, France in May. "Bringing home a gold medal this year, after winning the World Champions Trophy, would be everything to me," says Hart.
"Being selected for the national team is the highest honour there is in the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® circuit. I am very happy to be a part of the team, and I will give it my very best to help bring home a gold medal. Our team has evolved over the years; there is a core group of us that have been working together since 2014, when we first won our silver medal is Austria. We won another silver medal in Germany in 2016, coming second against Australia. We have been close to the gold each time, so teams like New Zealand and Australia need to watch their backs," says Marcel Dupuis, a six time Team Canada member.
George Williams joined Team Canada in 2016 as the Canadian Rookie Champion and travelled to Germany, when Canada brought home a silver medal. "I have been training very hard, and it showed at the Canadian Championship where I put it all out on the line. I'm excited to be on Team Canada and bring that training and hard work to bring home a gold medal."
Representing Canada in the Individual Competition on October 20th will be 2018 Canadian Champion Nathan Cumberland (Keswick Ridge, NB) after his win at the 2018 STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Canadian Championships held in Wasaga Beach, ON in July.
