Teamsters gains a foothold in Ontario hospitals

TORONTO, Aug. 22, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Teamsters Union Local 419 has gained approximately 2000 new members as the result of a merger with the Ontario Workers' Union (OWU). The OWU represents 14 bargaining units with two of the more notible sized units being Humber River Hospital with three hospital locations and William Osler Health System with two hospital locations.

"This is an important breakthrough into the health care industry," said Local Union 419 president Brian Lawrence. "This merger shows our credibility with workers in a very important sector."

The workers chose the Teamsters Union because of its reputation and service quality. The merger will be complimented by OWU labour representatives joining the Local Union 419 team.

"We had an opportunity to join an organization known for its quality of services and power," commented Tim Oribine, one of the architects behind this merger. "As soon as we met with the Teamsters' officers, we knew that our members would get excellent service."

"The Teamsters have the human, financial and material resources to fight back when employers make arbitrary decisions," added Oribine. "For them, injustice is unacceptable and must be dealt with swiftly." 

The Teamsters represents 115,000 members in Canada in all trades. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with which Teamsters Canada is affiliated, has 1.4 million members in North America.
