Techweek Announces Techweek100 Toronto-Waterloo 2016 List
Honoring Local Innovators for their Contributions in the Tech Industry
TORONTO, June 15, 2016 /CNW/ -- With Techweek Toronto just around the corner (July 25-31), Techweek is thrilled to share one of its most anticipated announcements of the year: the Techweek100. These prestigious awards honor outstanding members of each local tech community for their recent successes and promising company developments.
Techweek Toronto 2016 is proud to enter Canada for this first time this year to announce its first-ever award list for the flourishing tech hub. Selected by the Techweek team and an Executive Advisory Board made up of ten Toronto-based tech leaders, the Techweek100 Toronto-Waterloo list spotlights the various important roles needed to create, energize and maintain a robust innovation ecosystem. In a new 2016 award structure, this list recognizes three categories, comprising of 50 Innovators, 25 Cultivators and 25 Ambassadors, as follows:
- Innovators (50 companies) — With a seat at the center of the ecosystem, innovators keep the tech community evolving and moving forward by generating bold new ideas and challenging industry status quos. The wide-ranging set of industries represented by these Innovators speaks to the growing vitality of innovation in the city. The Innovators of Techweek100 are companies — both established and startups — that are actively shaping the future via new thinking. Companies on this year's list include Sensibill, Endy Sleep and EventMobi.
- Cultivators (25 organizations) — Cultivators are the support system of tech entrepreneurship, making dedicated efforts to grow the resources available to Innovators. This support can take many forms — from financial to educational to advisory, or a wide range of other sustaining efforts. The Cultivators of this list include VCs, incubators, educational institutions and other local organizations whose contributions continually foster Toronto-Waterloo's growth into an internationally recognized innovation center. Cultivators include Communitech, JLabz, DMZ and MaRS.
- Ambassadors (25 individuals) — As notable leaders in the tech industry, Ambassadors act as spokespeople and thought leaders for the community. The Ambassadors of Techweek100 are an inspiring and diverse group founders, influencers and other prominent voices acting as positive voices of change. Ambassadors include Navdeep Baines (Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development of Canada), Ilse Treurnicht (CEO of MaRS), and Iain Klugman (CEO of Communitech).
