TELUS investing $9 million in Ottawa this year to expand advanced broadband
services
OTTAWA, April 19 /CNW/ - TELUS today announced it is investing $9 million in Ottawa in 2010 as it continues extending the reach and speed of its advanced wireline and wireless broadband services.
"Since 2000, TELUS has made $18.6 billion in operating and capital investments to deliver advanced technology and services across Ontario," said Terry Nemeth, vice-president of sales, public sector for Ontario and Atlantic. "This year, as part of our investment across Ontario, we are focusing $9 million on bringing the benefits of some of the world's best telecommunications technology to our customers right here in Ottawa."
"TELUS' massive investment in information, communications and technology is also delivering advances in priority areas such as healthcare, the environment and small business. TELUS is contributing to improved patient outcomes and efficiency in the health care sector with new technologies such as electronic health records and TeleHealth that help shift the focus from remediation to prevention of disease. We are also helping our customers reduce their impact on the environment by providing the latest telecommuting, conferencing and data management solutions enabling the movement of ideas and information instead of people, vehicles and paper. Additionally, access to our leading connectivity, collaboration and network services is changing the game for businesses in Ontario, improving their efficiency, competitiveness and productivity," said Darren Entwistle, TELUS President and CEO.
This year TELUS will also continue to expand its wireless broadband network throughout the province, building on the November 2009 launch of the fastest and biggest wireless network in Ontario and Canada*. TELUS' HSPA network enables speeds of up to 21 Mbps† and reaches 93 per cent of the Canadian population (http://www.telusmobility.com/en/ON/network/about.shtml).
"Having one of the world's most advanced wireless networks gives our customers in Ottawa the choice of iconic devices such as the iPhone, BlackBerry devices, Android-powered smartphones, and our high speed wireless internet keys," said Mr. Nemeth.
Janet Yale, Chair of the TELUS Ottawa community board, added TELUS' commitment to Ottawa extends beyond infrastructure and new services.
"Since 2000, TELUS, our team members and retirees in Ottawa have contributed more than $5 million to charitable and community organizations in Ottawa, including The Royal Ottawa Health Care Group, the Great Canadian Theatre Company and the Education Foundation of Ottawa," said Ms. Yale.
TELUS was recently recognized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals as the 2010 Most Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation globally, the first time a Canadian company has ever received this international honour.
The capital investment disclosed in this release is consistent with TELUS' overall capital expenditure guidance for 2010.
