The 2013 Toronto Blue Jays Honda Super Camp comes to St. John's
TORONTO, July 12, 2013 /CNW/ - The ultimate baseball experience begins on Monday, July 15th for approximately 120 participants at Airport Heights in St. John's, NF. Kids aged 9-16 will be learning their skills and techniques from former Toronto Blue Jays alumni and former Major League players such as Roberto Alomar, Sandy Alomar Sr., Denis Boucher, Homer Bush, Lloyd Moseby, Devon White & Duane Ward. Each participant will receive a Blue Jays photo card supplied by Honda Canada, a hat, t-shirt, instructional manual along with a leather pro model Roberto Alomar Series baseball glove.
In partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada and Toronto Community Housing, Jays Care subsidizes registration fees for Blue Jays Baseball Academy Rookie Leaguers in each of the Honda Super Camps to help remove financial barriers to participation. During each Super Camp, a representative from the local Boys & Girls Club will be presented with a dedicated bat for the Club on behalf of the Blue Jays Baseball Academy. Blue Jays Baseball Academy Rookie League is entering its 25th season and will reach more than 5,000 children and youth across Canada.
With the goal of growing the game of baseball across Canada, Jays Care has invested $125,000 in the City of St. John's to refurbish Airport Heights Field for St. John's Minor Baseball Association. This undertaking will double the field usage and give up to 150 additional players access to the sport of baseball.
Major League Baseball and Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig named the Toronto Blue Jays as the 2012 recipient of the Commissioner's Award for Philanthropic Excellence, which was created in 2010 to annually recognize an extraordinary charitable and philanthropic effort of an MLB Club. The Blue Jays were honored this January for the "Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Academy," a series of initiatives to help support youth across Canada and provide them with opportunities on and off the field of play. Jays Care Foundation, the official charity of the Toronto Blue Jays, has received a $10,000 grant from Major League Baseball as part of this recognition.
