The Advance newspaper to receive Fire Safety Award
TORONTO, June 4, 2013 /CNW/ - The Advance newspaper will receive a Fire Safety Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council at a ceremony on June 12, 2013 in Toronto. The annual Fire Safety Awards recognize outstanding contributions to fire protection and prevention in Ontario.
The Advance is a community newspaper and has served the predominantly rural municipality of Grey Highlands since 1881. A long and valued partner of the Grey Highlands Fire and Emergency Services, the newspaper has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to fire safety awareness by publishing a number of fire department submissions and providing a space for a regular feature called At the Hall. The feature provides the opportunity for a fire department staff to write about life-saving fire safety information on an array of topics. The Advance also covers public education events and initiatives developed by the fire department.
"The Advance reaches Grey Highlands' unique population base that includes seasonal tourists, a significant number of older adults and a large Mennonite community," said Ted Wieclawek, Ontario Fire Marshal and Chair, Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council. "The newspaper is an important component of the fire department's public education efforts as it strives to reach these diverse groups."
The Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council gratefully acknowledges the support of its sponsors in this event: Technical Standards and Safety Authority, The Co-operators Group, Kidde Canada Inc., Home Depot of Canada Inc., Proctor & Gamble Inc., Electrical Safety Authority, CSA Group, Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc., Roxul Inc. and Underwriters' Laboratories of Canada.
