The AFNQL is reacting to the remarks made by Éric Salvail on Twitter
WENDAKE, QC, Oct. 19, 2016 /CNW Telbec/ - The Chief of the Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL), Ghislain Picard, expresses his outrage regarding the remarks made on October 18th by Mr. Éric Salvail during his TV show "En mode Salvail" and on the show's Twitter feed, where he compared menopause with the absence of rules on "Indian reserves".
"It is unfortunate to insinuate that our communities live in anarchy and without rules. That a public figure shared such a view in social media maintains negative prejudices and demonstrates such ignorance is unacceptable", denounced Chief Picard.
In an era of reconciliation where several measures must be put in place for education and awareness to better explain the realities of First Nations, it is imperative to encourage efforts to eliminate stereotypes of the kind.
"I strongly advise Mr. Salvail to make use of his notoriety to promote understanding between peoples, rather than adding to and feeding intolerance," concluded the Chief Picard.
