The AFNQL Welcomes the Recognition of the Système d'intervention d'autorité atikamekw in Youth Protection Français
WENDAKE, QC, Jan. 30, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - The Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL) welcomes the recognition, by the Government of Quebec, of a specific youth protection system, under the full authority and governance of the Atikamekw Nation. The Système d'intervention d'autorité atikamekw (SIAA) will allow the Atikamekw Nation to develop and implement services that are culturally sensitive to the Atikamekw children and their family.
"I want to commend the Atikamekw Nation and the Quebec Government for this historical agreement which takes into consideration the cultural and historical realities, stated Ghislain Picard, Chief of the AFNQL. As recognized last week at an emergency meeting in Ottawa in the presence of federal and provincial representatives, there is a need for concrete solutions to the aberrations and inequities in the area of child protection. This agreement is proof that with a true spirit of dialogue and openness, it is possible to achieve an outcome that is positive and full of hope for the children and families of the First Nations."
