The Best Mother's Day Gift: Keeping Mom Independent in her Own Home

Bayshore HealthCare finds Canadians are thinking about Moms long-term needs this Mother's Day

MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 5, 2015 /CNW/ - As Canadians get older, they are looking beyond the traditional Mother's Day gifts of flowers and chocolate. In fact, a new survey commissioned by Bayshore HealthCare Ltd. found that Canadians know the value of using the holiday as a way to plan for Mom, with almost one in three (30 per cent) acknowledging that they should use Mother's Day to think about what will keep her happy in the long term. They also know what's important to their Mom, with 75 per cent reporting that remaining living at home for as long as possible is a top priority for their Mom.

Not surprisingly, the Mother's Day survey found that Mom wants the same thing: to remain independent. The survey found that almost 70 per cent of Canadians don't want to be a burden to their children, with three quarters of Canadians (74 per cent) acknowledging that they will eventually need help to remain living independently in their own home. Similarly, among Canadian children, 81 per cent want their Mom to live in her own home as long as possible, with close to one in five (18 per cent) having already looked into home care services.

"Apart from being a day to celebrate and reflect on Mom and all she's done, we should be using Mother's day to look at what we can do for her and her health care needs down the road," says Keena Naik, Toronto Area Director, Bayshore HealthCare. "There are so many options that will help mom living in her own home and living independently. Through a bit of research and talking with Mom, she can find services that are right for her."

When it comes to their personal health care, Mom knows that additional assistance around the home would be beneficial while helping to keep her independent. In fact, an astounding seventy-five per cent of Canadians surveyed agree that a concierge service to help them do daily chores would be helpful while 77 per cent are open to the idea of having nurses come to their home rather than going to a healthcare facility.

Home care and concierge services, which include nursing, personal care, spring cleaning, shopping, and household chores help keep mom at home instead of a long-term care institution. From April 6 until May 10, Bayshore HealthCare in the Greater Toronto Area is offering Canadian mom's a special limited time offer on their  concierge services at $99 for three hours of Active Living Concierge Service.

Canadian children would also benefit from having a service attend to Moms needs. More than half acknowledge that having a service to help Mom with her daily chores would be beneficial to her. With 66 per cent of Canadians worrying that they cannot afford home care services when they are older, now is the time to start planning ahead.

"A lot of people just aren't able to make the trip to visit their parents on a daily basis, with one in five (19 per cent) of parents noting that their children live too far to visit them regularly," adds Naik. "Having an active living concierge service for Mom will help to give the entire family peace of mind that your mother is being taken care of while still doing the things she loves."

Mother`s Day Survey Methodology
From April 30^th to May 1^st, 2015 an online survey was conducted among 1,503 randomly selected Canadian adults who are Angus Reid Forum panelists. The margin of error—which measures sampling variability—is +/- 2.5%, 19 times out of 20. The results have been statistically weighted according to education, age, gender and region (and in Quebec, language) Census data to ensure a sample representative of the entire adult population of Canada.
