TORONTO, Feb. 2, 2015 /CNW/ - Toronto's prestigious independent girls' school, The Bishop Strachan School (BSS), today announced the appointment of Ian Rutherford to the newly created position of Middle School Principal.
Mr. Rutherford joins BSS from the Toronto French School (TFS), where he has worked for the past six years. There, he undertook a number of school-wide initiatives while occupying a central role as Diploma Coordinator, a post responsible for curriculum design, compliance and quality control to meet both Ontario and IB Diploma requirements. Prior to TFS, Mr. Rutherford worked as an educator in eight different countries ranging from Russia to Lebanon. He held leadership positions including Deputy Head at the International Secondary School in the Dutch city of Eindhoven and at the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa, Kenya.
The BSS Middle School program was designed and implemented under the leadership of Senior School Principal Dr. Angela Terpstra, and has evolved to the level where dedicated professional focus is required to continue its development.
"The BSS Middle School program has developed over the past several years as an area of focus to ensure the seamless transition of our powerful academic program from its Reggio-inspired beginnings in the Junior School to our inquiry-based program in the Senior School, while addressing the very specific needs of girls in early adolescence," says BSS Head of School Deryn Lavell. "We are thrilled to have Ian's talent, energy and unique experience to bring our Middle School program to the next level."
"The trajectory of my career has prepared me for this opportunity," says Mr. Rutherford. "I'm excited to bring to BSS the experience I've gained from working in diverse environments and cultures, and to contribute my passion for the value of emotional growth as a centrepiece of intellectual growth; it perfectly aligns with the values at BSS."
Founded in 1867, The Bishop Strachan School (BSS) is Canada's oldest day and boarding school for girls. Renowned for its powerful academic program and its focus on emotional, social and creative development, BSS offers girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 a world-class curriculum in a lively, challenging environment with state-of-the-art facilities, delivered by an expert faculty that prizes constant learning and renewal.
