The Canadian Depository for Securities Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Virtual Market Open Today Français
TORONTO, June 9, 2020 /CNW/ - The Canadian Depository for Securities (CDS), Canada's equities and fixed income clearing house, today celebrates its 50th anniversary. To mark the occasion, John McKenzie, Interim CEO, TMX Group, will join CDS employees, including Jay Rajarathinam, President, CDCC and CDS, Chief Technology and Operations Officer, TMX Group, and Wayne Ralph, Chief Operating Officer, CDS, in a virtual market open ceremony this morning at 9:30 a.m. ET.
"Over the last 50 years, CDS has built an impressive track record of operational excellence, delivering on its core foundational principles of providing clients across Canada's capital markets with efficiency, reliability and industry-leading value," said Mr. Rajarathinam. "Today, we celebrate this proud tradition with our colleagues across the country and pledge to continue our work to help solve client challenges now and into the future."
CDS was formed in 1970 in response to increased capital markets activity and escalating back office costs. The vision was to create an automated, centralized depository service and electronic clearing and settlement system that could handle higher volumes, and evolve to meet client needs into the future.
Today, CDS remains Canada's central securities depository, settlement and clearing hub for domestic and cross-border depository-eligible securities, with regional offices in Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary. CDS supports Canada's equity, fixed income and money markets, and is accountable for the safe custody and movement of securities, the processing of post-trade transactions, and the collection and distribution of entitlements. CDS holds more than $4 trillion on deposit and handles over 460 million domestic and cross-border securities trades annually. For more information, please visit the CDS website at www.cds.ca
