The Canadian Fertilizer Industry - Safety First

OTTAWA, March 11, 2014 /CNW/ - As a part of the Canadian Agricultural Safety Week 2014, The Fertilizer Safety and Security Council reminds Canadians to practice safe agriculture year-round.

The safe and secure manufacturing, handling, storage, transportation and application of commercial fertilizers was why the Canadian fertilizer industry established the Fertilizer Safety and Security Council. "The safety and security of Canadians is a priority for us and we want our products to be handled and used safely and securely in communities across the country," said Giulia Brutesco, Director of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs. "The Codes of Practice and training programs set a new global benchmark for fertilizer stewardship. Canadians should be very proud to be leading the way in world safety standards for fertilizer products."

There are many valuable resources available online for employees, transportation workers, first responders, farmers and the general public. These programs aim to enrich knowledge and enhance safety practices to minimize the risk of fertilizer products.  These programs include:

• Anhydrous Ammonia Code of Practice
• Anhydrous Ammonia First Responder Training
• Ammonium Nitrate Code of Practices
• Ammonium Nitrate Safety Training
• Driver Fatigue Management for Truck Drivers and Dispatchers
• Farmer Safety Training

Through government and industry support and cooperation, the Fertilizer Safety and Security Council continues to develop and enhance product protection measures.
