The Canadian Journalism Foundation announces Excellence in Journalism Award finalists
TORONTO, April 8, 2014 /CNW/ - The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) is proud to announce the Excellence in Journalism Award finalists in the large/national media and local/regional media categories.
Unlike other awards honouring specific journalistic achievements, the CJF celebrates news organizations that embrace ideals of journalistic excellence - accuracy, independence, accountability to the audience, courage and originality - with its annual Excellence in Journalism Awards. The shortlist contains news outlets that embody exemplary journalistic standards and practices with a resulting impact on the community they serve. "The range of nominations we received for both large and small media highlight the many different ways news organizations are adapting to the dramatic changes sweeping over the industry," says Chris Waddell, jury chair and director of the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University. "The nominees are all examples of innovations in coverage and relations with audiences matched with a sharp focus on the traditional strengths of influential and distinctive journalism."
The five finalists in the large or national media category are:
CP Picture Service
CTV News
Globalnews.ca
Toronto Star
Winnipeg Free Press
The five finalists in the local or regional media category are:
CBC Edmonton
CBC New Brunswick
Global Calgary
L'Écho de Frontenac
Vancouver Observer

The Excellence in Journalism Award, now in its 18th year, was established by Dr. F.L.R. (Eric) Jackman, chairman of the Jackman Foundation and founder of The Canadian Journalism Foundation.
