THE CASINO DU LAC-LEAMY BETS ON NEW COMPOSTING PROGRAM
GATINEAU, QC, Dec. 15 /CNW Telbec/ - As part of its sustainable development action plan, the Casino du Lac-Leamy has launched a composting program in partnership with the City of Gatineau. The objective is to collect reusable organic materials, while reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill sites.
The Casino du Lac-Leamy is the first major local business to participate in the City's compostable materials program. The equivalent of 110 garbage bags daily will be redirected to the composting facility. Annually, this represents 600 metric tonnes of waste, or 40,000 green garbage bags.
"This is a large-scale operation," explains General Manager Kevin G. Taylor. "We are among the first casinos in Canada to launch a composting program and I am proud to demonstrate that gaming establishments have sustainable development on their radar screen and are doing their share. The casino's Hilton Lac-Leamy hotel is among the first Canadian properties in the Hilton family to implement an ongoing composting program," adds Taylor.
During the first phase of the project, Casino employees integrated the collection of residual organic wastes into their daily routine. As of this week, clients can also participate at Le Café restaurant and at the hotel's conference centre.
For close to 15 years, the Casino du Lac-Leamy has been a driving force for the local economy and a major regional employer. Its sustainable development action, plan focuses on environmental, social and economic actions and is integrated within its long-term business plan. A sustainable development committee made up of employees helps to deliver each project.
