MISSISSAUGA, ON, Nov. 5, 2012 /CNW/ - The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) is proud to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Family Physicians of the Year with the announcement of the 2012 recipients of the Reg L. Perkin Award. Since 1972, the College has acknowledged family doctors for outstanding patient care, significant contributions to the health and well-being of their local community, and commitment to family medicine teaching and research. The award recipients are nominated by their colleagues, community leaders and the CFPC's 10 provincial chapters.
Canada's 2012 Family Physicians of the Year are:
"Our 2012 award recipients are dedicated to providing comprehensive care for their patients, and supporting their students and colleagues," says CFPC President, Dr. Sandy Buchman. "They each have unique areas of interest including palliative care, emergency medicine, advanced trauma life support, obstetrics, and support for enhanced use of electronic medical record systems. Many also channel their passions into family medicine research and teaching the next generation of family physicians. They are stellar examples of the outstanding family physicians we are so lucky to have to provide Canadians with high-quality health care."
"The Reg L. Perkin Award is special because it recognizes excellence among family physicians in Canada as well as the diversity that makes them special," adds Dr. Calvin Gutkin, Executive Director and CEO. "This year's award recipients are perfect examples. They come from a variety of urban centres and small rural communities, they work in a variety of practices, hospitals, institutions, homes and schools, and they each make significant contributions to their home communities. What they have in common is the passion for quality health care and providing the best for their patients. We commend them on their outstanding achievements."
Since 1996, the award has been named in honour of Dr. Reg L. Perkin, CFPC Executive Director from 1985 to 1996. The awards are presented as part of Family Doctor Week in Canada, which this year runs from November 12-17, 2012.
The award presentations will be made during a ceremony at the CFPC's annual Family Medicine Forum, which this year is held in Toronto, on Monday, November 12th. The awards program is supported by Scotiabank and the CFPC's Research and Education Foundation.
