VICTORIA, QC, Oct. 12, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced the Government of Canada's contribution to Rugby Canada in support of the 2012 Americas Rugby Championship from October 12 to 20, 2012, in Victoria, British Columbia.
"Rugby is gaining popularity in Canada, and this championship provides a perfect opportunity to further promote this exciting sport," said Minister of State Gosal. "Our Government is pleased to support the hosting of this event that will provide our athletes with further competition experience while perfecting their skills."
The Americas Rugby Championship, a round-robin tournament, will see the Canadian side face teams from the USA, Argentina and Uruguay.
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. A contribution of $50,000 was provided to Rugby Canada to host the 2012 Americas Rugby Championship through Sport Canada's Hosting Program. The Government of Canada has also committed $1,475,250 to Rugby Canada for 2012-13 through the Sport Support Program. Sport Canada's Athlete Assistance Program is providing $801,467 to support 46 men and women rugby athletes with living and training expenses.
